My husband played roller hockey with Gene for many years and remembers Nick as a young man sitting on the bench! “Mean Gene” would always skate over and talk to me and our kids after the game!!! Gregg ans i were reminiscing about how we spent so much money on Coyotes tickets and spent the whole third period of the game just catching up with Gene when we ran into him! Such an amazing man and too many memories to share! Thinking of all the family In their time of loss

#233 WILL ALWAYS REMIND ME OF YOU. Its still so hard to believe that youre really gone. Its like a bad dream thst you can't wake up from . As crazy as this sounds I can still hear your laughter see your face and reminisce about all the funny crazy things you would say your wild and crazy comebacks. There are some people that just come into our life and then others come into your life and they make an impact and you were just one of those people you just had a way about you that impacted everyone's life by having you in it or around it. You were TRULY just a GREAT GUY w/ a great personality and sense of humor that made you special! You are going to be forever missed and the bus yard will never be the same again!

I worked with Gene on Corrections . He had an infectious smile and great laugh. He was someone you wanted with you when the sh*t hit the fan, great officer . I am so glad I Re-connected with him on Facebook. I wish I made it out to Arizona to shoot with him and have some laughs . I am still in shock. I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Gene in person, but my son Joshua and I had worked with Kim over many years. I know that they were extremely in love. I wish I could have met this man that brought so much happiness to Kim. My heart aches for his family at his loss. May the Lord embrace all of the family and give them the support and peace at this very sorrowful time. May he Fly soar with Eagles!

I was going through a difficult situation at work and Gene was a incredible friend to me. Years later we reconnected on FB and had been regularly FaceTiming each other. I feel blessed to have known him, Godspeed Brother. RIP

I was blessed to meet Gene through his fiancé, Kim Tonery. He visited the ER several times and I did his EKG. Normally that is a fast task, but not with Gene. Once we started talking about "lead delivery devices" and how little we liked specific politicians time passed very quickly. I didn't want to leave the room as I was having too much fun. It was like I had known Gene for a long time and had met an old friend. He even made leaving the room for other work fun. All I had to do is mention the names of certain politicians and he'd grumble and say things I can't repeat here. He knew exactly what he was doing. I never had so much fun at work or laughed so much in that building - ever. I had mixed feelings every time I saw him. I didn't want him sick in the ER, but "I get to BS with Gene!" The one time he was granite serious was when we were talking firearms and I told him how lucky he was to have a woman in his life who not only would shoot with him, but actively liked firearms. He looked very thoughtful and grunted something to the effect that he didn't know what she saw in him. It was obvious by the tone and his distant eyes that Kim meant everything to him and that she made an incredible impact on his life. As time passes and I think of Gene, I'll always remember him by how I felt after I talked to him - smiling and happy.

Just heard of Gene's passing. He was the first face that my three kids would see before they got to school everyday. Gene was very passionate. If they were not standing at the bus stop yet he would slowly approach the stop to give them a chance catch the bus in case they had been late getting out the door. He loved our German shepherd dog and always shouted to greet him. He was always cheerful, happy, encouraging and very protective. One time my little girl stood up before the bus came to a complete stop and he called her out. He told me about it and was really serious when he said it because he didn't want anything to ever happen to her. She never put herself in danger like that ever again. He loved my kids and guarded them, Gene made them feel great and special. He cheered on their accomplishments like they were his own kids. He always talked about Nick, was very proud of him and loved him so. Our family would always run into him at one sporting event or another. Even if we weren't riding or waiting for our kids, he would still give us a big wave when he'd see us standing outside our house or driving through the neighborhood. I knew my kids had the best bus driver ever! (As my little one, who is now in high school, put it.) We are all so sad to hear of his passing and our hopes and prayers are with his love and Nick as they go through this time.
